Family Fun Reading Night: Making It Happen. One hundred and fifty family members at Maplewood School enjoyed an evening of fun-filled activities that celebrated the benefits of reading. The school hosted a pajama party family reading night on April 14, 2008 for 3rd and 4th grade students. The goal of the activity was to enhance student's basic literacy skills, build positive relationships among teachers, parents, and community partners, as well as promote reading and writing outside of the classroom. The night involved reading, dinner, and school information and updates. The Beta Club provided babysitting for children not in the target group. They also showed a movie to the 3rd & 4th graders in their pajamas while Melissa Tarasiewicz and Gwen Pullard spoke to parents about the importance of parental support and involvement and how it impacts student achievement. Family Reading Night was a fun way to encourage students’ interest in books, stimulate their imagination and get families involved. It worked for every level of reading proficiency and established reading as something that everyone can do together. Pictures of Family Reading Night
