On January 31st , Baton Rouge Parent University, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, the YWCA Center for Family Empowerment, and Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge presented, " Closing the Achievement Gap," a community workshop for parents, students and educators. This informative event was held at Kenilworth Middle School. Admission was free to the public, and childcare, food, and beverages were provided. The focus of the workshop was high-stakes test preparation and test-taking strategies for students. The key-note speaker was Monica Ballay from the Louisiana State Improvement Grant (LaSIG), who presented information about Schoolwide Positive Support (PBS). Break-out sessions for parents and students included:
^• Information about the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program and Graduate Exit Exam
• Educational Rights of Children with Exceptionalities
• Understanding Your Child’s Individual Education Plan
The event was well attended and enjoyed by all.
